Join ICA on June 6th for a Lunch and Learn Featuring the Mapping Prejudice Project
ICA invites you to an upcoming BYO Lunch and Learn featuring Kevin Ehrman-Solberg and Kirsten Delegard of the Mapping Prejudice project. The Mapping Prejudice project explores the history of racially-based housing discrimination in Minneapolis by mapping racially-restrictive housing covenants and exposing the resulting residential segregation and structural racism that persists today. This event will be in two parts: a presentation followed by an interactive volunteer session. You are welcome to attend only the presentation if you are unable to stay for the volunteer session.
Mapping Prejudice co-founders, Kirsten Delegard and Kevin Ehrman-Solberg, will present their work, then facilitate an interactive volunteer session. Learn about the history of racial covenants and their impact on the built environment of Minneapolis, then participate in collecting data for the project. Mapping Prejudice is working to illuminate the invisible, and they need your help. They are relying on community volunteers to help document the history of these discriminatory deeds. Please bring your laptop if you are interested in staying for the group work session. We'll read covenants together and extract the data needed to put them on a map.

Topic: Mapping Prejudice: Visualizing the hidden histories of race and privilege in Minneapolis
When: Thursday, June 6th from 11am – 1pm. The first hour from 11am – 12pm will be a presentation and Q&A session, while the last hour from 12pm – 1pm will be an interactive group work session. Those who are not able to stay for the interactive session are welcome to attend the first hour only.

About the Presenters
Kevin Ehrman-Solberg is a graduate student in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Society at the University of Minnesota. He recently completed his Master of Geographic Information at the University of Minnesota. He masterminds the work of building the database necessary for the Mapping Prejudice maps, massaging the data that volunteers create into points that can be mapped digitally. He has also done the spatial analysis for the project, showing how covenants changed neighborhood demographics and how they laid the groundwork for later redlining and devastating urban renewal projects. He is an active proponent of the digital humanities whose work focuses on the intersection of race, place, and historical narrative.
Kirsten Delegard is the Director and one of the co-founders of the Mapping Prejudice Project, which is located in the Borchert Map Library at the University of Minnesota. She has a faculty affiliation with the Department of Geography, Environment and Society and the Heritage Studies and Public History Program at the University of Minnesota. A third generation Minneapolitan, Delegard has written extensively about the history of her hometown. Five years ago she resolved to lead her neighbors in the process of remembering the difficult past. She loves working with community members to grapple with the legacies of racist practices with the hope of building a more equitable future. She is a graduate of the Minneapolis Public Schools, Wesleyan University, and holds a Ph.D. in history from Duke University.
